Replaced an ageing mixed-laptop estate with 8,000 ZeeTim endpoints running ZeeOS, centrally imaged via Matrix. All AVD and Citrix workspaces delivered from a single endpoint policy.

The problem

Large public-sector estates accumulate heterogeneity. Hardware arrives in procurement waves, each with its own image, its own age, and its own support burden — and the result is an endpoint population that nobody can patch or replace uniformly.

That heterogeneity is also a security problem. A mixed laptop estate means data sitting on thousands of devices that leave the building, each one a potential disclosure. For a government entity, where residency and access evidence are explicit obligations, that is the hardest part of the architecture to defend.

What we deployed

ZeeTim endpoints running ZeeOS, centrally imaged through Matrix. Three properties made this the right fit at this scale:

  • Nothing stored locally. The endpoint receives pixels. A device that leaves the building carries no data, which removes an entire category of disclosure risk.
  • One policy, two brokers. The estate delivers both Azure Virtual Desktop and Citrix workspaces from a single endpoint policy — users get the workspace they need without the endpoint team maintaining two management planes.
  • Central imaging. At 8,000 devices, per-device imaging is not a task, it is a permanent headcount. Centralised management turns replacement into a swap.

Outcome

  • 8,000 endpoints standardised on ZeeOS
  • One endpoint policy covering both AVD and Citrix workspaces
  • Ageing mixed-laptop estate retired

Why it matters beyond this deployment

The instinct on an estate this size is to phase the replacement over several budget cycles. But a partial migration keeps both management planes alive, which means it keeps both cost structures alive too. Standardising the endpoint OS is what makes the rest tractable.

Worth noting: ZeeOS also runs on existing x86 hardware, so the same standardisation is available without a full hardware purchase — the approach used in our Qatar deployment.
