Migrated a tier-1 bank from on-premise VDI to Azure Virtual Desktop with Hydra. 38% logon reduction, full Teams audio via TeamsFox, across 4,200 trader desktops.

The problem

Trading desktops are the least forgiving workload in end-user computing. A delay that would go unnoticed in a back-office session is immediately visible on a dealing floor, and it arrives at the worst possible moment — the market open, when every user logs on inside the same fifteen minutes.

On-premise VDI estates of this age tend to hit the same wall: capacity sized for the average rather than the peak, profiles that have grown for years, and no per-pool visibility to show which part of the stack is actually responsible for the delay.

What we deployed

Hydra by Login VSI was the core of the migration. It extends Azure Virtual Desktop with per-user and per-pool telemetry and auto-scaling, which changes the sizing conversation from estimation to measurement — you scale against observed demand rather than a worst-case guess, and you can attribute cost to a pool rather than to the tenant as a whole.

TeamsFox addressed the collaboration side. Running Teams inside a virtual session routes media through the session host, which is what produces the thin, delayed audio most VDI users recognise. TeamsFox offloads media processing to the endpoint, so calls run natively while the desktop stays virtual.

Outcome

  • 4,200 trader desktops migrated from on-premise VDI to Azure Virtual Desktop
  • 38% reduction in logon time
  • Full-quality Teams audio for front-office staff

Why it matters beyond this deployment

The pattern generalises to any latency-sensitive desk. The logon improvement did not come from buying more capacity — it came from being able to see which pool, profile and application were responsible, then acting on that. Cost control and performance turn out to be the same problem viewed from two directions.
